AbstractThis study deals with synoptic scale features of cloudiness over tropical South America during the first Wet Season Atmospheric Mesoscale Campaign (WETAMC) of the Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA) and the validation of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), during the January to February, 1999 period. The analysis was done using digital infrared images from GOES-8 satellite. The obtained results show that during the study period the spatial variability of cloudiness in the tropics is mostly related to squall lines, which originated on the northern cost of Brazil, and the convective activity in central Amazon basin and along the South Atlantic Convergence Zone. Analysis of the percentage of cloudiness over a number of sub-regions of 2 x 2 degrees of latitude/longitude box shows that the diurnal cycle is well defined along the northern coast of Brazil and in central Amazon basin reaches a maximum around 1500 LST.
